From a report on Iran just before it all kicked off in 1979

THIS APPROACH UNDERLIES THE SOCALLED
“BAZAAR MENTALITY” SO COMMON AMONG PERSIANS, A
MIND-SET THAT OFTEN IGNORES LONGER TERM INTERESTS IN FAVOR OF IMMEDIATELY OBTAINABLE ADVANTAGES AND COUNTENANCES PRACTICES THAT ARE REGARDED AS UNETHICAL BY OTHER NORMS.

5. COUPLED WITH THESE PSYCHOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS IS A
GENERAL INCOMPREHENSION OF CASUALITY. ISLAM, WITH ITS EMPHASIS ON THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD, APPEARS TO ACCOUNT AT LEAST IN MAJOR PART FOR THIS PHENOMENON.

Now then, let me rephrase this….

THIS APPROACH UNDERLIES THE SOCALLED
“GOD FEARING CONSUMERIST MENTALITY” SO COMMON AMONG AMERICANS, A MIND-SET THAT OFTEN IGNORES LONGER TERM INTERESTS IN FAVOR OF IMMEDIATELY OBTAINABLE ADVANTAGES AND COUNTENANCES PRACTICES THAT ARE REGARDED AS UNETHICAL BY OTHER
NORMS.

5. COUPLED WITH THESE PSYCHOLOGICAL LIMITATIONS IS A
GENERAL INCOMPREHENSION OF CASUALITY. CHRISTIANITY, WITH ITS
EMPHASIS ON THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD, APPEARS TO ACCOUNT
AT LEAST IN MAJOR PART FOR THIS PHENOMENON.

There, that makes more sense now.

A new home for Lazarou?

From wikileaks:

Gadzhi’s Kaspiysk summer house is an enormous structure on the shore of the Caspian, essentially a hugecircular reception room — much like a large restaurant –attached to a 40-meter high green airport tower on columns, accessible only by elevator, with a couple of bedrooms, a reception room, and a grotto whose glass floor was the roof of a huge fish tank. The heavily guarded compound also boasts a second house, out buildings, a tennis court, and two piers out into the Caspian, one rigged with block and tacklefor launching jet skis.

……now that’s the sort of place I could live in!
